“The dead will pass away, but dreams will remain”. These were the last words spoken by Irma Bandiera, a strong and courageous partisan who was brutally murdered after being blinded by the Germans in 1944. A woman to whom the Municipality of Castelfiorentino named a street in the 1970s and who still represents a symbol of struggle and freedom today, providing the inspiration for the initiative scheduled for Tuesday 25 November (“Irma and the others”) at the Ridotto del Teatro del Popolo (5.30 pm), on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. An evening that, through the memory of the past, aims to draw attention to the current situation, characterised by the scourge of femicide and countless episodes of violence (from domestic violence to harassment and rape) that unfortunately affect thousands of women every year. Violence that requires a set of measures that can involve the whole of civil society, without distinction of sex or role, in order to eliminate cultural and behavioural stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programme includes greetings from the Mayor, Francesca Giann\u00ec, and the Councillor for Equal Opportunities, Marta Longaresi. This will be followed by a speech by Daniela Cipollini (secretary of the SPI CGIL Lega di Castelfiorentino), the screening of a video by Roberto Saviano and a definition of \u201cPeace\u201d by Nadia Meacci, which \u201cdoes not only mean the absence of war, but also, and above all, agreement, harmony, tranquillity, the absence of physical and moral pain, calm and serenity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This will be followed by presentations by the Lilith Association for women and adolescents, which, supported by objective data, will illustrate all the work carried out and activities in progress, and by Giancarla Armano (secretary of the Unicoop Castelfiorentino members’ section) on the theme \u201cAn ideal journey towards change\u201d. Among the new features of the evening will be the reading of testimonies from the Centro Ascolto Uomini Maltrattanti (Listening Centre for Abusive Men), the first in Italy to deal with men who commit violent acts in relationships since 2009, in the knowledge that real change will only be possible with the full involvement of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Like every year”, emphasises Daniela Cipollini, “the SPI CGIL union in Castelfiorentino, together with Unicoop Firenze and many other associations, is delighted to participate in the organisation of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It is important to take action against a social scourge that unfortunately shows no sign of abating, contributing with these events and keeping attention focused on the problem, aware that in addition to raising awareness, educational and cultural intervention aimed at the younger generations is needed to protect women.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This day”, emphasises Mayor Francesca Giann\u00ec, “must be an opportunity to draw attention to a phenomenon such as violence against women, which unfortunately has again seen dramatic figures this year, a sign that there is still much work to be done in removing gender stereotypes so that a culture of respect and equality can be promoted”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiatives promoted on the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women will continue on 8 December at the Castelnuovo d’Elsa Theatre with the evening event \u201cAgainst Silence”, which includes a meeting with the Lilith Association (speech by Paola Rossetti) at 4.30 pm, the theatre show \u201cValentina\u201d by Gatteatro at 5.00 pm, and finally a self-defence demonstration with Marco Pistolesi at 5.30 pm. This will be followed by the lighting of the tree and an aperitif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
