This morning, dozens of special little bombs “exploded” in the Parco dei Filosofi urban park. No need to panic: these are “seed bombs”, natural tools designed to encourage the regeneration and biodiversity of green spaces. The initiative involved over 150 primary school pupils from Castelfiorentino, who took part in an educational and environmental activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative stems from an idea by Councillor Federico Nunziata, responsible for environmental policy and biodiversity, and was welcomed and developed in collaboration with the headteacher and the Castelfiorentino Farmers\u2019 Association as part of the \u201cOrto in cassetta\u201d project. The aim: to help create a wildflower meadow within the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But what are \u201cseed bombs\u201d? They are small, handmade spheres made from clay, compost, vermiculite and a mix of wild plant seeds. This combination protects the seeds and facilitates their germination. From these \u201cballs\u201d, containing around 80 different species, plants will grow that will create a natural, self-regenerating flower meadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This technique, inspired by the work of Japanese botanist Masanobu Fukuoka, promotes biodiversity whilst enhancing the area\u2019s aesthetic appeal, with minimal maintenance and limited mowing, thereby ensuring the plants\u2019 full life cycle and natural self-seeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The area in question, divided into two plots totalling approximately 2,000 square metres, will host a wide variety of annual and perennial species: cornflowers, chamomile, poppies, forget-me-nots, violets, yarrow, daisies, pimpinella, along with various grasses to ensure the lawn\u2019s density and variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seven Year 2nd classes from the primary school, already involved in the educational project, took part in the initiative. Also present were the Councillor for Education, Marta Longaresi; Rosanna Spinelli, secretary of the Castelfiorentino Farmers\u2019 Association “Tradizione e Sviluppo”; Marco Cappellini of Prociv Arci; and the Giglio Rosso Photography Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Philosophers\u2019 Park”, said Councillor Federico Nunziata, \u201chas encountered some difficulties with the trees taking root. That is why we have launched a series of measures that will improve its overall quality in the coming years. The decision to create a wildflower meadow meets several objectives: enhancing the landscape, supporting biodiversity and reducing maintenance. The involvement of the children has been fundamental; they are the true protagonists of this symbolic yet practical initiative. With their own hands, they have helped to bring new life, encouraging the presence of pollinators and other animal species. It is a gesture that speaks of care, regeneration and coexistence, as well as being an important experience in environmental education. It is also a way for us to celebrate World Earth Day together, which we marked yesterday”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
