Wednesday, Feb. 1 Feast of the patron saint with Holy Mass and Procession.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Feb. 1 Castelfiorentino celebrates in a solemn way Saint Verdiana, patron saint of Castelfiorentino. An anniversary toward which the Castelfiorentino community has always shown a sincere feeling of devotion, capable of uniting lay people and Catholics in the common values of respect, spiritual tradition and the very identity of a territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The religious celebrations in honor of the Saint – which in fact kicked off on January 16 with the “doubles” (the ringing of the bells that according to tradition would announce Verdiana’s “transit to heaven”) – will officially begin on Tuesday afternoon (January 31 – 4 p.m.) with the opening of the Shrine and the exposition of the Saint’s urn, which will be followed (5 p.m.) by the celebration of First Vespers and the exposition of the Holy Relics. A Holy Mass is scheduled at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the feast will begin early in the morning with the traditional patronal fair (Kennedy Square and Potente Avenue) that will last the entire day. At the same time (8 a.m.) Holy Mass will be held in the Cellina, where visits and prayers are allowed without restrictions. Holy Mass is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. in the Shrine of St. Verdiana and will be presided over by Fr. Leonardo Tarchi, head of the Diocesan Center for Youth Ministry. The celebration will also be attended by Councillor Simone Bruchi, representing the Municipal Administration. At 12 noon again the Holy Mass and in the afternoon (3:30 pm) a new celebration for children and families. This will be followed (4:30 pm) by the procession through the streets of the city center, which will follow the usual route. At the end of the procession there will be a blessing of the town. Second Vespers are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of St. Lawrence to conclude the celebrations at the Shrine of St. Verdiana with the last Holy Mass at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a reminder, on the solemnity of St. Verdiana, the urn of the Saint is displayed at the back of the Church, at the entrance to the Shrine, while the major relics are placed on the high altar. The other relics remain instead, in a visible position, in the Chapel of Relics, where, however, it will not be possible to enter. At the entrance, flasks with St. Verdian water and holy pictures of the saint are distributed for those who wish to enter. The stall with sacred objects, on the other hand, is set up in the Museum of Sacred Art, which is accessed from the portico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The card – The “doubles”. The celebrations for the feast of Saint Verdiana are always heralded by the so-called “doubles.” But what, exactly, are the “doubles”? The explanation comes directly from the Proposto of Santa Verdiana, Don Alessandro Lombardi: “When Verdiana completed her transit from this life to Heaven, suddenly the bells of the Pieve, touched by no one, began to ring festively, and an infant, detached from its mother’s womb, explained the reason for this miraculous event that made the whole town flock to the cellina. Since then Castelfiorentino has been repeating the ringing of the bells of all the churches since fifteen days before the feast: the so-called “doubles,” which were accompanied by a prayer recited in the family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
