With “De Bergerac – Ghosts from Cyrano de Bergerac”, the GAT Teatro theatre company from Castelnuovo d’Elsa finally arrives at the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino.

The original story, a famous comedy published in 1897 by French poet Edmondo Rostand and inspired by the historical figure of Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, one of the most imaginative writers of 17th-century France, tells the tale of a rebellious and melancholic hero. A grumpy swordsman with a large nose. A dreamer poet. It tells a love story that is impossible to forget because it is not only about pure and absolute feelings towards another person but also about unconditional love for freedom. Against the backdrop of a respectable but thoroughly corrupt society, in a world where you are either powerful or allied with those who are, Cyrano refuses to be tied to anyone. It is precisely the disruptive force of a man who refuses to bow down and constantly fights to assert his independence and uniqueness that makes Cyrano a truly universal and still relevant comedy.

The theatre company GAT stages a contemporary and meta-theatrical reinterpretation of Rostand’s classic, exploring the freedom of imposed “scripts”, recently proposed by playwright Michele Santeramo and starring Anna Foglietta, Edoardo Leo and Marco Bonini, who play a Cyrano eager for a new life, in an “unfinished” show that involves the audience.

Even in the version proposed by GAT, the protagonist, Cyrano, played by Nicola Pannocchi, simply does not want to relive for the umpteenth time all the pain of his unfulfilled love. But Rossana, his beloved to whom he cannot declare his love, played by Nicoletta Maria Loisi, and Cristiano, his rival in love, played by Carlo Conforti, are not having it. The show must go on. They only exist if they are on stage, they only exist in their roles, when they play their parts.

The play is directed by Chiara Riondino, with sets and costumes by Alessio Innocenti and music and lighting by Simone Gasparri and Gabriele Balducci.

“The version proposed by the theatre company GAT Teatro”, says the Mayor of Castelfiorentino, Francesca Giannì, “has the advantage of involving the audience, who will not only be spectators but will become an active part of the creative process. All that remains is for us to take part, surprise ourselves and spend a pleasant evening in the company of one of the most active associations in the local cultural and theatrical scene”.
