Sunday 11 June 2023 (9 pm) the first of five musical events under the stars. Entrance is free. The proceeds will go to the flooded families of Emilia Romagna.
Five evenings of music under the stars in the evocative setting of the Monastery of Santa Maria della Marca. These are the “Melodies in the March”, a musical event held in the ancient settlement whose origins date back to the visit that Saint Francis made to Castelfiorentino in the 13th century, and which on Sunday 11 June will be opened by a Brass Concert of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra. An evening that promises to be full of emotions, in which music by Mozart (“Ouverture” from L’Impresario) Verdi (“Preludio” from Macbeth), Mascagni (“Brindisi” from Cavalleria Rusticana), Lehàr and Hazell will be played under the baton of Fabiano Fiorenzani, concluding with a joint performance (“Trumpet Voluntary” by Henry Purcell) together with the Brass Squilli of the Castelfiorentino School of Music.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Concert will be performed by the Orchestra Professors: Claudio Quintavalla, Emanuele Antoniucci, Tobia Guerri, Stefano Benedetti (trumpets), Michele Canori (horn), Giovanni Dominicis, Massimo Castagnino (tenor trombones), Gabriele Malloggi (bass trombone), Andrea D’Amico (euphonium), Mario Barsotti (bass tuba). Conducting and arrangements by Fabiano Fiorenzani.
On the part of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the theatre’s spokesman, Paolo Klun, says: “The concerts of the Maggio Metropolitano Cycle – financed by the Metropolitan City of Florence – have enabled our theatre for years now – in fact, we have now reached the seventh edition – to reach all the municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Florence. With concerts of the orchestra and choir frequently united in more streamlined groups (as is the case of this concert in Castelfiorentino where the brass ensemble will perform) and with delightful shows for young people, we bring our music to the greater Florentine territory to experiment new forms of participation and collaboration with the public and to stimulate and strengthen the relationship between the citizens and the Teatro del Maggio. The invitation we received to inaugurate the events of the “Melodie della Marca” review of the Giugno Musicale Castellano, gives us great pleasure not only for the invitation itself and for the evocative venue where the concert will take place, the monumental complex of the Monastery of Santa Maria della Marca, but also for the purpose of the concert itself: the proceeds of the free offerings from the audience will be donated to the flooded families of Emilia Romagna.”
“This review,’ observes Stefano Mangini, director of the municipal music school of Castelfiorentino, ‘proposes to valorise the musical realities of the various associations in our territory, opening at the same time to other groups and orchestras of great level, such as that of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. The debut evening is also a good opportunity for the Squilli Brass group of our School of Music, directed by Jasmine Conti, which has recently obtained some important awards”.
“We are honoured,” emphasises Deputy Mayor Claudia Centi, “that the Professors of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra will inaugurate our Giugno Musicale Castellano, a festival that once again proposes the tried and tested format, much appreciated by the public, of five evenings in the open air under the banner of good music, in a setting with good acoustics. An event that also represents an opportunity to rediscover the Monastery of Santa Maria della Marca, which together with the Church is undoubtedly one of the most evocative in our area”.
After Sunday’s concert, the Castellano Musical June includes four other concerts: “Musica in festa” (Tuesday 13 June, with the groups of the Music School, the S. Maria Goretti nursery school and the “G. Verdi), “Trio Jazz” (Percussion, Friday 16 June), “Guitarra mi amor” (Wednesday 28 June, by Ensemble di Chitarre “La Piccola” and Orchestra Orpheus), “Cavalleria Rusticana” (Friday 30 June, with the Associazione “Amici della Lirica Umberto Borsò”, Corale Amedeo Bassi, Coro Lirico Castellano, Orchestra Orpheus).
The Monastery of Santa Maria della Marca is located in Via delle Monache 7. In case of rain the concerts will be held in the Church of Santa Chiara. Admission to the concerts is free (subject to availability) but an offering is welcome. The proceeds of the festival will be donated to the flooded families of Emilia Romagna.
The Giugno Musicale Castellano is promoted by the Municipality of Castelfiorentino and the Orpheus Association in collaboration with the Association “Amici della Lirica Umberto Borsò”, the School of Music and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Foundation, thanks to the contribution of Banca Cambiano 1884 Spa
