The civil commitment and private life of Antonino Caponnetto, the magistrate who challenged Cosa Nostra. The mind of the Palermo anti-Mafia “pool” (formed, among others, by Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino) whose activities culminated in the 1986 “maxiprocesso” that saw over 400 defendants on trial. This is the calling card of “Amuninni. A story of love and mafia”, a play by and with Massimo Caponnetto, which will be staged at the Castelnuovo d’Elsa Theatre on Friday 21 February, at 9:30 p.m.

Based on the book “There may have been a time. The love story between Nino and Bettina Caponnetto”, the show – directed by Chiara Riondino – is presented as a family portrait of Antonino, the magistrate who founded the “pool”, whose private and civil life, a symbol of a troubled era in the history of republican Italy, is retraced by his son. The love between Nino and his wife Bettina, which blossomed in Pistoia in the 1940s, is at the centre of the narrative. Their example becomes an invitation to go on, every time life confronts you with a test. And of trials, Nino and Bettina will have to face many. Some decisive for their personal destiny, others also decisive for the history of our country.

The performance on Friday 21 February is part of the theatrical review promoted by the Gruppo Amici del Teatro di Castelnuovo (under the patronage of the Municipality of Castelfiorentino) and has been inserted in place of the one with Paolo Migone, cancelled due to an unforeseen event.

“This show”, observes the Councillor for Culture, Franco Spina, “recounts the human story of one of the major protagonists in the fight against the Mafia in the 1980s, and who even after retiring from the judiciary continued his commitment to defending legality, starting with the young. An example, therefore, of moral values and civil resistance, whose message and valuable teachings we have a duty to continue to spread among the new generations”.
