At every home game this season, ABC presents an award to those who have shaped the history of the Castelfiorentino club. Yesterday, the award was presented to Remo Parri, one of the founders.

With its first league game, ABC Castelfiorentino kicked off the celebrations for its 60th anniversary with a new logo and a season that will feature the presentation of numerous awards to those who have shaped the club’s history.

Last Sunday, the halftime break was transformed into a tribute to Remo Parri, one of the founders of ABC back in 1966 (for whom he also served as coach and manager), who received an award from the Betti and Gilardetti families: an emotionally charged halftime break, accompanied by a long round of applause from the crowd.

The brief ceremony, which will be repeated at every ABC home game throughout the 2026–2027 season, is intended to pay tribute to all those who, in various roles and at different times, have shaped these sixty years of history—even though the tradition of basketball in Castelfiorentino dates back as far as the end of World War II.

As you may recall, it was in fact thanks to the occupation by the U.S. Army that this sport was played in Castelfiorentino for the first time. In the fall of 1945, four young men from Castelfiorentino organized the first basketball game, and the idea was born to create the first team, which took the name Polisportiva Uisp.

After some ups and downs, and thanks in part to the new basketball court built by the municipality, the new club was founded in 1966 and took the name ABC. Today, the Castelfiorentino Basketball Association is an active and well-established sports and social organization, deeply rooted in the local community, which organizes amateur activities at the senior, youth, and mini-basketball levels for both men and women.

“We are delighted,” said the Mayor, Francesca Giannì, and the Deputy Mayor in charge of Sports, Gianluca D’Alessio — “to join in the celebrations for this very important anniversary, in one of the sports most beloved by the public, particularly by young people, who have passionately played on various teams, achieving particularly prestigious results over the years, while also making a significant contribution to strengthening the social fabric and fostering community life.” This is also why, as the municipal administration, we will continue our commitment to ensuring that this sport has increasing access to modern facilities, in order to encourage its growth among the younger generations.”
