Active reading throughout 2026 for the benefit of elderly people in nursing homes. To offer them an opportunity for recreation, socialisation and also – why not – to keep their minds “trained” during their stay in the various facilities. This is the noble goal of the “Active Reading” project, promoted by the Castelfiorentino Coop members’ section.

An initiative that arose, as explained by Giancarla Armano (president of the Coop section), “from the experience of the Reading Group, which meets monthly to read books of all genres and topics, pouring this passion into other initiatives that promote reading not only as a vehicle for knowledge, but also as a means of sharing moments of pleasant socialising”. This gave rise to “the idea of organising events involving readings of short stories and entertaining tales for elderly residents of the retirement homes in Castello managed by the Propositura di Santa Verdiana”.

Specifically, the “Active Reading” project will take place every two weeks, alternating with the other E.M.D Ciapetti centre, located at the Pieve di Sant’Ippolito, and will continue until May, then resume in mid-September until the end of November.

The presentation of the project was accompanied by a reading by writer Giovanni Taddei of an autobiographical fairy tale composed especially for this event. The evening was attended by the President of the Castelfiorentino Coop members’ section, Giancarla Armano, the Provost of Santa Verdiana, Don Leonardo Tarchi, the managing director Alessandro Martini, and the Councillor for Social Policies, Federica Parisi.

“A wonderful project”, emphasised Councillor Federica Parisi, “which aims to improve the emotional well-being of elderly people in nursing homes, who need not only to be cared for but also supported through new stimuli that can prevent or at least delay cognitive decline. For this reason, I believe we should thank the Castelfiorentino cooperative members’ section, which has always been involved in numerous social initiatives, and the Propositura di Santa Verdiana for enthusiastically welcoming this proposal, which I am sure will undoubtedly improve their quality of life”.
