Mayor Giannì: “Our female and male athletes are the shining face of our city. Knowing how to get on with others, knowing how to work as a team. These are the great lessons that sport teaches us.”

The central role of sport in social and interpersonal life, but also as an opportunity for personal growth and the development of character and personality. These are the principles underpinning the Castellano Sports Award, now in its second year, during which the Municipal Council (the event’s organiser) presented awards on Saturday evening to all those who have distinguished themselves in the various sporting disciplines practised in the area: from cycling to basketball, from volleyball to football (including women’s football), from kickboxing to tug-of-war, and from athletics to artistic gymnastics.

The ceremony, held in Piazza Gramsci, was attended by the Mayor, Francesca Giannì, and the Deputy Mayor responsible for Sport, Gianluca D’Alessio.

“We organised this event,” say Mayor Francesca Giannì and the Councillor for Sport, Gianluca D’Alessio, “to emphasise once again the social values of sport, but also to step away from the world of social media for one evening and return to the thrill of live experiences, listening to the stories, journeys and sacrifices that have shaped our champions, their victories and even their defeats. Because, yes, we must know how to win – without resting on our laurels – but we must also know how to lose, pick ourselves up after a defeat, learn to support one another, and know how to be a team. These are the great lessons of sport. Thank you, a heartfelt thank you to all the sporting organisations that nominated the award winners, who have distinguished themselves through their achievements, values and commitment. Our athletes are the shining face of our city.”
