In Castelfiorentino (Nov. 19-20, Pala ABC) tournament sponsored by the association chaired by the young castellan, who died prematurely in a car accident in February this year

A Medieval Combat Tournament in memory of Carlo Desideri, a young Castelfiorentino man who died prematurely in a car accident in February this year. This is the tribute that ASD “Iron Tower” intends to pay to the man who for a long time was its President as well as Captain of the medieval combat team, as part of the historical re-enactment “Peace after Montaperti,” scheduled in Castelfiorentino on Saturday, Nov. 19 and Sunday, Nov. 20.

The “Tournament of the Three Towers” (this is the name of the competition, now in its second edition) will take place inside Pala ABC (via XXV Aprile) on the two afternoons of Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. onward (free admission), and it will be attended by some 40 fighters from all over Italy, who, with the use of faithfully reproduced armor from the 14th-15th centuries, will compete through various specialties: from dueling (on Saturday afternoon, with long sword, sword with shield, sword and brocchiere, and the tougher “profight”) to spectacular team melee clashes (Sunday afternoon) alternating with soft-weapon dueling that will see the debut of many young fighters.

“Iron Tower,” which organized the tournament in collaboration with the City of Castelfiorentino, is the only team present in Tuscany in this discipline (three of its members are CONI-recognized instructors) and has participated in numerous national and international tournaments, winning prestigious awards. Currently chaired by Sara Fabbri (Medieval Fencing Instructor at the Lupo Fight Club Mugello), the team has presided over the program of this tournament sticking faithfully to that of the first edition, which was organized by Carlo Desideri in June 2021.

As in other competitions, men and women will participate indiscriminately in the tournament, both in individual and team fights.

“Carlo,” notes Sara Fabbri, president of Iron Tower, “believed strongly in the women’s sector of the sport and its promotion, at all levels, as he was for inclusion and gender equality. The program on Saturday and Sunday is the same as he had wanted for the first edition, in which women and men will fight together.”

On Sunday morning, “Iron Tower” fighters and other participants will parade through the historic center of Castelfiorentino starting from Kennedy Square and arriving at Gramsci Square, where around 11:30 a.m. there will be a brief remembrance of Carlo. In the afternoon, tournament competitions will resume according to the established schedule inside Pala ABC

“I thank the Iron Tower Association,” observes the mayor, Alessio Falorni, “for organizing this memorial in memory of one of our beloved fellow citizens, Carlo Desideri, and for doing so by fitting coherently into the program of the historical re-enactment of the Peace after Montaperti, which was arrived at precisely at the end of a bloody medieval battle. This is a unique event of its kind, and for this reason I invite all citizens to follow it, as well as the other events we have arranged in the city center for this event. It will be a particularly eventful two days that will end on Sunday afternoon with the historic parade of the historical processions of Florence and Siena and the “signing” of the peace agreements.”
