The programme for the Metropolitan Olympics and Paralympics was unveiled yesterday in the press room of the Metropolitan City of Florence, and Castelfiorentino is also taking part alongside 23 other municipalities with three events, two of which are scheduled for this weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
On Saturday 19 September (4.30 pm) at the PalaGilardetti in Via XXV Aprile, the awards ceremony for artistic gymnasts will take place (with around 80 athletes to be honoured); this discipline has seen such strong growth in recent years that the council has recently built a dedicated sports facility.
On Sunday 20 September, at the Granaiolo competition venue (from 9.00 am), the Serie B final is scheduled, with promotion to Serie A at stake. Around 80 participants are expected, who will compete over the three hours allotted to the event in a bid to secure a place in the top division. At 12.00 noon, the catch will be weighed, with the results determining the final standings.
Finally, on 3 and 4 October, two mini-basketball tournaments are scheduled at the PalaBetti (Viale Roosevelt). On Saturday 3 October (9.00 am–2.00 pm), a three-way tournament for the ‘esordienti’ category (born in 2015) will take place between ABC Castelfiorentino, Virtus Certaldo and Montesport Montespertoli Basket. On Sunday 4 October (9.00 am–2.30 pm), a four-team tournament for the ‘Scoiattoli Big’ age group (born in 2018) is scheduled, featuring ABC Castelfiorentino, Sancat Basket Firenze, Valdisieve Basket and Etrusca Basket San Miniato. “We have enthusiastically welcomed,” emphasise the Mayor, Francesca Giannì, and the Councillor for Sport, Gianluca D’Alessio, “the Metropolitan City’s proposal to take part in this major event, which is not only about sport but also about promoting the individual local communities that experience it on a daily basis through a wide range of activities suitable for all ages. Sport is a powerful vehicle for socialisation, integration and social inclusion, and as the local council we are committed to supporting it at every level: by investing in facilities to ensure they are increasingly modern, and by continuing to support the clubs and the many sporting disciplines practised in our area.” The Metropolitan Olympics and Paralympics, now in their fifth edition, are organised in collaboration with the Destination Florence Foundation and Firenze Smart.
