A hymn to good fortune, which may also be a good omen for the New Year. It is in this spirit that the Filarmonica “G. Verdi” will perform a selection of pieces from “Carmina Burana”, Carl Orff’s masterpiece, as part of the New Year’s Concert scheduled for Wednesday, 1 January 2025 (5:00 p.m.) at the Teatro del Popolo in Castelfiorentino.

The Castellano Opera Choir and the Children’s Choir of the Orpheus Association will also perform on stage. Following the music of Strauss and Verdi, they will accompany the pieces from the German composer’s famous opera, which focuses on fortune spinning like a wheel, empress of the world and symbol of destiny, at times ironic and benevolent, at other times mocking and cruel, to which human beings are subjected.

“We are now close to the Filarmonica’s traditional New Year’s Eve concert”, observes the President, Alessio Pontiggia, “and this year, in addition to the beautiful Viennese pieces, we will have a suite of Carmina Burana accompanied by the Castellano Opera Choir and the white voices of the Music School! Orff’s adaptation is powerful and grandiose, and captivates the audience in a veritable explosion of emotions. Don’t miss this concert!’”.

“For the Castellano Opera Chorus”, the Association “Amici della Lirica Umberto Borsò” informs us, “this proposal represented an interesting but also challenging opportunity to confront one of the most representative and famous cornerstones of the 20th century symphonic-choral repertoire. There are, in fact, many difficulties in it: from those represented by a type of vocalism that is often pushed to the extremes of the stave and physical tightness, to the linguistic one that envisages tense and tightly rhythmic syllabications on Latin and medieval German texts”.

“We are delighted to start the New Year under the banner of great Music with Carmina Burana“, emphasises Culture Councillor Franco Spina, “a set of poems probably composed by itinerant clerics, young poets and students freely expressing their life experiences, their desire for love and pleasure, and their reflection on the human condition. An emblematic hymn to Fortune and a reflection on human vulnerability, our desires, hopes and expectations. A great collaboration between the musical associations of Castelfiorentino, which may mark the beginning of 2025 under the good star of sharing and beauty”.
