A journey that begins in Ventotene, the island where many anti-fascists were sent into exile, and ends with the resistance movement against Nazi-fascism in the years 1943-1945. This is the plot of the book “Andare per i luoghi della Resistenza” (Visiting the places of the Resistance) by Paolo Pezzino, which will be presented on Thursday, November 20 (6:00 p.m.) at the Circolo Arci “Il Bastione” (via Verdi, 18-20).
The evening, which is sponsored by the Municipality of Castelfiorentino, will feature Marta Longaresi, Councilor for Memory of the Municipality of Castelfiorentino, Silvano Matteoli, president of the Circolo Arci “Il Bastione,” and Marco Cappellini, president of ANPI Castelfiorentino. The author will be present. Manuel Carraro, Delegate for Memory and Anti-Fascism at Arci Empolese Valdelsa, will moderate the various speeches.
Paolo Pezzino, former professor of contemporary history at the University of Pisa and president of the Ferruccio Parri National Institute from 2018 to 2024, has published numerous studies related to the period of the resistance, focusing in particular on the massacres committed by the Nazis in Tuscany and beyond. He was also scientific director of the project “Atlas of Nazi and Fascist massacres in Italy” (www.straginazifasciste.it), promoted by ANPI and the Ferruccio Parri National Institute.
With this work, the author aims to restore dignity and value to the stories of ordinary citizens “who opposed the German occupation and fascism, starting with women, whose decisive contribution has long been overlooked. Numerous episodes of civil courage have been taken into account in tracing this itinerary, which combines the already well-known symbolic places of the partisan struggle with others that are less well known but whose memory remains vivid.”
“Another event linked to remembrance”, notes Marta Longaresi, Councillor for Remembrance, “will take place in our town, an opportunity to listen to stories of men and women who resisted and liberated our country from Nazi-Fascism and to learn about Paolo Pezzino, a historian of great importance.
