“Women’s rights, women’s empowerment”. This is the title of the film festival which will kick off on Wednesday 25 March at the “Stanza Rossa” (Via IV Novembre 2/d). The festival will feature four films, all screened on Wednesday evenings with free admission, and is open to all members of the public (screenings start at 9:15 p.m.).
Organised by the “Angelo Azzurro” UICC Film Club and the cultural association “La Stanza Rossa” in collaboration with Castelfiorentino Town Council, the festival will open on Wednesday evening with “There is still tomorrow”, written and directed by and starring Paola Cortellesi, which has been a huge hit with audiences and has won numerous awards (including six David di Donatello awards and the award for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Rooster Awards in China). Set in post-war Italy, the film pays homage to Italian neorealism by recounting a period of fears and hopes, an Italy still caught between violence and prejudice, highlighting the silent struggles waged by many women to secure greater rights.
Wednesday 1 April: a thriller set in the United States: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. Set in the heart of a state still haunted by the legacy of slavery, it tells the story of a mother’s struggle to urge the police to investigate her daughter’s death. Wednesday 8 April: a historical drama: “Suffragette”, centred on the early 20th-century movement of the same name, which saw British women leading the fight for the right to vote. The film series concludes on Wednesday 15 April with “Poor Creatures”, released in 2023: a fantastical, surreal and sensual tale that draws attention to women’s right to self-determination.
The film series forms part of a wider project marking the 80th anniversary of women’s first vote, promoted by the Municipality of Castelfiorentino and funded by the Region of Tuscany
“I am very happy,” says the Councillor for Equal Opportunities and Remembrance, Marta Longaresi – “to have been able to involve the association ‘La Stanza Rossa’ and the ‘Angelo Azzurro’ Film Club in this project, through a film festival open to all citizens, which will be followed in April by a programme reserved for schools, from the Istituto Comprensivo to the Enriques School, to be held at the Ridotto del Teatro in collaboration with the Fondazione Teatro del Popolo. A double opportunity, therefore, to pay tribute once again to this important anniversary, as we did on 7 March and through the exhibition that will remain open until Saturday 28 March at the events space of the “Il Progresso” Club.
The project, promoted by the Municipality of Castelfiorentino, is organised in partnership with the Fondazione del Teatro del Popolo, ANPI Castelfiorentino, Lega SPI CGIL Castelfiorentino, the “F. Enriques” School, the Comprehensive School, the “Angelo Azzurro” UICC Film Club and the cultural association “La Stanza Rossa”.
